Invitation to Two Academic Seminars on Energy Transition with a Kyoto University Professor

Energy transition is not merely a matter of technological innovation and emissions reduction. It also raises important questions concerning social justice, institutional frameworks, and economic development models. To foster academic dialogue on these issues, the Faculty of Management at the School of Business and Management (HSB), Vietnam National University, Hanoi, will host two specialized seminars featuring Professor Dimiter Ialnazov from Kyoto University, Japan, on October 26 and 29, 2026.

The seminars will provide lecturers, researchers, postgraduate students, undergraduates, and other interested participants with opportunities to explore international research perspectives on energy transition. They will also encourage discussions on the challenges associated with moving toward sustainable development models in Vietnam and other emerging economies.

Professor Dimiter Ialnazov: Research Expertise in Energy Transition and Sustainable Development

The Faculty of Management at HSB is pleased to welcome Professor Dimiter Ialnazov from Kyoto University, Japan, for an academic visit and knowledge-sharing activities in October 2026.

Professor Ialnazov specializes in political economy, development economics, and institutional economics, with a particular research focus on energy transition and sustainable development in emerging and developing economies. His work contributes to a deeper understanding of how institutions, public policies, and socioeconomic conditions influence the expansion of renewable energy and the transformation of energy systems.

These issues are particularly relevant to Vietnam, where the energy transition requires a careful balance between emissions reduction, energy security, business competitiveness, and equitable development. Examining this transformation through the lenses of institutional economics and political economy broadens the discussion beyond technological choices to include policy mechanisms, market incentives, and the conditions necessary for long-term systemic change.

Professor Ialnazov's visit to HSB offers lecturers, postgraduate students, and undergraduates valuable opportunities to exchange ideas on sustainability while creating a foundation for future academic and research collaboration.

Two Complementary Seminars: From Just Energy Transition to Institutional Analysis

The two seminars are designed to complement each other, examining energy transition through the interconnected perspectives of sustainable development, social justice, and political economy.

SEMINAR 01

“Sustainable Development and Just Energy Transition”

The first seminar explores the relationship between energy transition and sustainable development, with particular emphasis on ensuring fairness throughout the transformation process. Beyond reducing emissions and expanding clean energy, the transition raises important questions about how costs and benefits are distributed, its effects on workers and communities, and differences in energy access among social groups.

From this perspective, a just energy transition is not solely an environmental objective. It also depends on institutional quality, effective policy design, and the capacity to coordinate different stakeholders across the economy.

TIME: 9:30–11:00 AM | Monday, October 26, 2026

SEMINAR 02

“An Evolutionary-Institutional and Political Economy Framework for Energy Transition”

The second seminar examines the analytical foundations of energy transition, focusing on evolutionary-institutional approaches and political economy. Within this framework, the shift toward new energy systems is understood as a process of systemic transformation shaped by institutional rules, market structures, stakeholder interests, and policy priorities.

This perspective helps explain why countries may follow different transition pathways and why similar policies do not always produce comparable outcomes across distinct socioeconomic contexts. It provides an important analytical basis for studying and designing energy transition policies that reflect each country's development conditions.

TIME: 9:00–11:00 AM | Thursday, October 29, 2026

Through these seminars, participants will have opportunities to engage directly with an international scholar on both theoretical and practical aspects of energy transition. The discussions will also offer comparative perspectives from economies including Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, and China.
