HSB Postgraduate Students Explore Just Energy Transition Through International Academic Perspectives

On the morning of 31 October 2026, postgraduate students at the School of Business and Management (HSB), Vietnam National University, Hanoi, participated in a workshop entitled “Sustainable Development”, featuring Professor Dimiter Ialnazov from Kyoto University, Japan.

The workshop offered international academic perspectives on just energy transition while providing students with opportunities to apply interdisciplinary knowledge to the analysis of contemporary sustainable development challenges.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT & ENERGY TRANSITION

Understanding Energy Transition Through Economic, Policy and Sustainability Perspectives

As climate change and the imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions present increasingly complex challenges for countries worldwide, energy transition has become more than a technological issue. It is closely intertwined with economic development, public policy, energy security and long-term sustainability.

During the workshop, Professor Dimiter Ialnazov of Kyoto University shared in-depth analyses of global trends in renewable energy (RE), the key drivers of energy transition and the barriers confronting countries as they seek to transform their energy systems.

Drawing on his research expertise in political economy, development economics and sustainable energy transitions, Professor Ialnazov examined the issue from multiple perspectives, highlighting the interconnections between national energy mixes, economic efficiency, environmental impacts and the role of public policy in facilitating energy transition.

A particularly noteworthy component of the workshop was an examination of changes in Japan's energy mix in 1973, 2010 and 2023, with particular attention to policy adjustments following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. This case study enabled students to better understand how major events can reshape national energy policies and underscored the importance of balancing energy security, economic development and environmental protection.

ACADEMIC PERSPECTIVE

A just energy transition involves more than increasing the share of clean energy. It also requires consideration of energy accessibility, the equitable distribution of benefits and costs, and the social implications of the transition process.

Through these discussions, students were introduced to the concept of Just Energy Transition, gaining a broader understanding of the relationships between technological transformation, economic efficiency and social responsibility in sustainable development policymaking.

POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH & CRITICAL THINKING

Strengthening Research Skills and Interdisciplinary Analytical Capabilities

Beyond the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, the workshop fostered an interactive academic environment through group discussions, data analysis and presentations of research findings.

Building on the international case studies and experiences presented, HSB postgraduate students had the opportunity to apply knowledge from management, economics and sustainable development to the evaluation of real-world challenges. Discussions addressed the costs of renewable energy, environmental impacts, barriers to the adoption of solar and wind power, electric vehicles, and the role of public policy in accelerating energy transition.

In particular, examining Japan's experience in relation to Vietnam's development context helped broaden students' research perspectives and deepen their understanding of the complex and interconnected nature of development challenges in a globalised environment.

By combining expert-led discussions with collaborative academic activities, the workshop encouraged students to strengthen their critical thinking, data analysis and policy evaluation skills, while developing the capacity to formulate evidence-based solutions to complex challenges.
